Respiratory Issues Protocol
(Including RAO, IAD, Allergies, Heaves, and General Respiratory Distress)
Protocol:
Begin with the Basics Course to learn proper tape handling, stretch, and technique. For respiratory issues, progress to the Certification Course, or use the following from the Applications Library: Decompression/Immune Support application, Circulation application, Allergies/Bug Bites application, and the Fascia Chain application.
-
Apply the Decompression/Immune Support application and the Fascia Chain application as demonstrated in the respective courses. Focus the Fascia Chain application on the rib cage and intercostal spaces to support lung expansion and ease breathing.
-
For horses with significant respiratory distress, combine the Decompression & Immune Support application with the Circulation application over the ribcage and lower neck to enhance lymphatic drainage and reduce inflammation.
-
For chronic or severe cases, use the Decompression & Immune Support application and alternate between the Fascia Chain application and Circulation application as needed.
-
For horses with allergy-related symptoms in the head, apply the Allergies/Bug Bites application to support upper airway function, remove fluid buildup, relieve allergy-related eye issues, and relieve tension that may contribute to airway restriction.
-
Continue the protocol until symptoms resolve and breathing is normal at rest and during work.
Tape Type:
-
4-Way - 2" (recommended for the Decompression/Immune Support application)
-
2-Way - 2" (recommended for the Allergies and Bug Bites Support application)
-
2-Way - 3" (for Circulation and Fascia applications or larger breeds/areas)
When to Use:
-
For horses diagnosed with RAO, IAD, heaves, allergies, or general respiratory distress (always after veterinary assessment and diagnosis)
-
As part of a management, recovery, or performance plan
-
To support lung function, ease breathing, reduce airway inflammation, and improve comfort
-
For horses exposed to dust, pollen, or environmental allergens
How Long to Tape:
-
For acute respiratory flare-ups, use until all signs of respiratory distress, coughing, or reduced performance have resolved (re-evaluate every 7–10 days).
-
For chronic or recurring issues, use during flare-ups, allergy season, or periods of increased respiratory stress.
-
Leave the tape on until it loses its recoil, becomes loose, or collects debris underneath.
-
For severe or chronic cases, a 4–8 week period of continuous use may be required for full recovery and to prevent recurrence.
For Chronic Cases:
For ongoing or slow-resolving respiratory issues, use the Decompression/Immune Support application (Applications Library) and alternate between the Fascia Chain application (Applications Library) and the Circulation application (Applications Library) every 2 weeks. Add the Allergies/Bug Bites application (Applications Library) for horses with allergy symptoms in the head, such as coughing, runny nose, or itchy, watery, or goopy eyes. Coordinate with your veterinarian for ongoing assessment and adjustment.
Respiratory Management Note:
-
Always rule out underlying infections, environmental triggers, and dental issues.
-
Provide dust-free bedding, soak or steam hay, and minimize exposure to allergens.
-
Ensure turnout in clean, well-ventilated areas.
-
Monitor for signs of respiratory distress, nasal discharge, or coughing.
-
Work closely with your veterinarian for optimal management and medication as needed.
-
Document response to taping and adjust protocols as needed.
Clinical Reasoning:
These protocols increase circulation and lymphatic drainage to the chest and airway regions, reduce inflammation, and support lung expansion. The Decompression/Immune Support application (Applications Library) activates the lymphatic system, producing an antihistamine effect and calming the body’s response to perceived intruders (antigens). The Fascia Chain application (Applications Library) enhances rib mobility and eases breathing by breaking up fascial adhesions and rehydrating fascia tissue, allowing muscles, skin, and fascia to glide with every move and every breath. The Circulation application (Applications Library) helps clear airway inflammation and fluid. The Allergies/Bug Bites application (Applications Library) addresses lymphatic nodes in the head, reducing reactivity and removing fluid buildup. Consistent use supports comfort, respiratory health, and improved performance, especially during allergy season or in horses with chronic respiratory conditions.
