Poll & TMJ Issues Protocol For Horses

What This Protocol Covers

Need options for horse poll pain or jaw problems? This protocol spells out what to use—and how to access the full course and products for lasting results, all in the Signature Bundle.

  • What to use for: poll pain, TMJ issues, headshaking, and tension in horses
  • When and why to apply each application: protocols for acute discomfort, chronic sensitivity, or recurring jaw/poll problems
  • How to help your horse relax and recover: guidance for long-term muscle memory, neurologic support, and fascia health
  • Signature Bundle unlock: Every how-to video and all supplies needed, designed for confident, effective poll and TMJ care

Protocol:

Begin with the Basics course to learn proper tape handling, stretch, and technique. Use the Poll/TMJ application found in the Applications Library. For headshaking, apply both the Poll and the Allergies and Bug Bites applications together. For suspected or confirmed Head Shaker's Syndrome (HSS), complete the Poll and Allergies and Bug Bites applications, document detailed notes, and record before/after videos over at least one week for accurate assessment. For severe poll or TMJ tension, use both the Poll and TMJ protocols together.

Tape Type:

  • 4-Way - 2" (recommended for Poll, and TMJ applications)
  • 2-Way - 2" (for Allergies and Bug Bites application)

When to Use:

  • For horses with poll pain, TMJ tension, or headshaking
  • As part of a management or rehabilitation plan alongside veterinary care, dental evaluation, and appropriate bodywork
  • To relieve poll and jaw tension, reduce pain, support neurologic function, and improve comfort
  • For horses with behavioral issues or performance problems linked to Headshakers, or poll/TMJ discomfort

How Long to Tape:

  • For poll issues, a 6-week continuous period of taping is suggested to re-write muscle memory; then continue as needed after that
  • For TMJ issues, use until all sensitivity and reactivity are gone
  • Leave the tape on until it loses its recoil, becomes loose, or collects debris underneath
  • For chronic or recurring issues, reapply as needed during flare-ups or periods of increased stress
  • For HSS assessment, maintain applications and documentation for at least one week to evaluate progress or possible need to alter the applications. If you do not see significant results, add in the Poll application for a 6-week period

For Chronic Cases:

For ongoing poll or TMJ issues, especially if your horse is missing teeth, we suggest using the Fascia Chain application to address possible fascia line damage, such as adhesions and dehydration. Reapply as needed, and coordinate with your veterinarian and dentist for ongoing care and assessment.

Poll, Headshakers, and TMJ Management Note:

  • Always rule out dental issues, cervical misalignment, and underlying neurologic causes
  • Ensure proper bridle fit and avoid excessive poll pressure
  • Do "cookie/carrot" stretches during the 6-week muscle memory stage to help release the poll, C-spine, and thoracic spine; this will enable your horse to self-adjust and stay in alignment
  • Use regular dental care to support jaw and poll health
  • Document behavior and response to taping for ongoing evaluation

Clinical Reasoning:

This protocol increases circulation and lymphatic flow to the poll and TMJ regions, reduces local and referred pain, and relieves muscle tension. The Poll application supports neurologic signals between the brain and the rest of the body, while the TMJ application helps restore jaw mobility and comfort. For headshaking, the protocol calms the nerve "shock" the horse feels, removes inflammation on and around the nerve, eliminates fascial adhesions, rehydrates the fascia, and allows normal function to return. Consistent documentation and video assessment are critical for accurate diagnosis and ongoing management. For severe cases involving the poll and TMJ, adding the Fascia Chain application will rehabilitate the entire fascia lines attached to the dysfunctional anatomical parts. Injured, dysfunctional, or dehydrated fascia anywhere along the line can cause issues for the whole area. This approach addresses the current issue while simultaneously preventing problems further down the road.
