Integrative Taping for Complex Trauma in a Broodmare - Swelling, Neurologic trauma, Instability
Cherry, a 19-year-old AQHA broodmare with a foal at side, presented following catastrophic right hind limb trauma with an open laceration and extensor tendon exposure, complicated by a severe anaphylactic reaction to IV phenylbutazone and residual partial blindness. Due to persistent swelling, impaired rest/recumbency, and foal-related interference with bandaging, a staged adjunctive taping plan using 2-way stretch tape was implemented alongside ongoing veterinary management, targeting distal limb swelling support, sacroiliac-region comfort/stability to facilitate recumbency, and poll-region decompressive support. Across sequential applications, the case notes documented improved edema control, return of recumbency behavior, and reduction in poll swelling with concurrent improvement in visual function, with adhesion and durability primarily limited by surface contamination, scratching, and foal interaction.
